History of PRINCE2®

PRINCE2® (Projects In Controlled Environments) is the internationally accepted project management methodology adopted by many organisations world-wide for managing projects that is flexible, adaptable, and tailorable. It is commonly used as a de-facto project management methodology in many government organisations.

History

PRINCE2® is an international standard used throughout the world.  The project management method originated from the United Kingdom (UK) government developed by Simpact Systems Ltd in 1975 and initially known as PROMPT II (Project Resource Organization Management and Planning Techniques). Since then it has been revised and updated a number of times to what it is today as the most internationally practised project management methodology.

Brief history can be seen from below figure.

An overview of PRINCE2® 7

Okay, so what’s PRINCE2®?

PRINCE2® stands for Projects In Controlled Environments. It does not fall under the Agile umbrella, but Agile projects can be done with PRINCE2. Launched in 1996, PRINCE2® is based on seven principles and is now the most widely used project management methodology in the world. So much so, that PRINCE2® qualifications are a standard requirement (or desire) of project management jobs for many companies.

PRINCE2® is a customer-focused project management system. With a relational set of principles, practices, processes and people management. PRINCE2® helps management think critically about and justify a project. It helps them ask and understand whether they should take on a particular project, and weigh up project performance of benefits, scope, costs, time, quality, risks and sustainability. The methodology also focuses on effective, efficient project and people management. Success on a PRINCE2® project is measured by how well it enables the project’s benefits to be realised by the customer.
